Hopkin Rees

I am 80 years old and in my life have had many incarnations. Brought up in a joinery cabinet making shop I benefitted from having on site a trade as a cabinet maker and marquetarian before going to university where I pursued a Philosophy degree. The mother of my wife was a seamstress who when I expressed an interest taught me and when I married, I made some of my wife's clothes and of course my daughters' clothes and now my grand daughters'. My paying career has been teaching English with a speciality in children's literature and at night school taught cabinet making. I am very much a driven person constantly making something or other. My principal interest for seventy years or more has been making furniture but since the death of my wife it has been quilting. I bought myself a Bernina long arm which I mastered and have made more than 30 full sized quilts which my extensive family have had good examples. Latterly, I have been interested in making decorative art quilts. Persuaded by J and B sewing of Newport, that I should be showing my work, I entered the 2020 Quilt Festival competition and in the Art section was very pleased to come a Runner Up.
